Mehndi, the most significant pre-wedding ritual.

Mehndi which is also known as henna is a herbal paste. The herb paste contains not only mehndi but also eucalyptus oil and clove oil. Mehndi designs is often associated with positive vibrations and being blessed. In many states of India, the mehndi ceremony is held the night before the wedding. It has the purpose of wishing the bride good fortune in her journey with her spouse through life. It is organized by the bride’s family with only female members in attendance.

If the mehndi lasts very long, then the bride is said to be blessed and fertile. It is commonly thought that the darker the color of the mehndi on a bride’s hand the more she will be adored by her husband. Applying mehndi can prevent stress and prevent illness before the wedding. Over several centuries mehndi has become deeply ingrained as a part of Indian culture, customs and folklore.

Contemporary Mehndi designs.

The most well-known design is the circular design. It is usually floral in nature and can be made more complex by adding more petals and details.

Mehndi designs can also look like a hand bracelet. It is a perfect mix of modern and traditional design. It starts with a bracelet shape around the wrist and hand to which further details and floral motif is gradually added.

Mehndi design can also be tiny flowers snaking around the hand as if one is holding an open garland twisted around the forearm. It requires a lot of patience since hundreds of small flowers like jasmine have to be drawn carefully. Make sure that some are filled in to give depth to the art.

Similar to the above is leafy strands, and the small flowers are substituted with tiny leaves. It looks as if one has wrapped a vine around the hand.

The mehndi ceremony remains the central part of pre-wedding rituals. Many things have changed but not the application of this body art. Arabic designs and glowing pastes can also be found in recent years. It remains a very happy occasion for both families, and traditional music is usually played to entertain guests.
